Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

We’ve just come back from seeing Underworld 3 at the cinema.

As a big fan of the previous two movies i was really excited to see that a new one had been released although i’ve still only seen one TV ad for it. Before hand i popped on to IMDB to see what the plot was and i was a bit worried to see that not only was it a prequel to the previous two but also that neither Kate Beckinsale or Scott Speedman wern’t in it :(

I was pleasantly surprised as it is actually a good movie :D

I won’t go in to too much detail as i don’t want to spoil anyone’s suprise but the story this time focuses around Lucian who was the first human/werewolf to be born and Viktor takes him under his wing although keeps him as a slave. Lucian falls in love with Viktor’s daughter Sonja and want’s to free himself and the other Lycans and be with Sonja.
Needless to say things don’t quite go as planned so the slaughtering begins.

The special effects as in the previous movies are fantastic as is all the action. The end takes you virtually to the first frame of the first movie where Kate Beckinsale is squatting on that high building about to jump to the ground.

If you enjoyed the first two movies then you’ll definately enjoy this one! If like me you’re just a fan of anything Vampire and Werewolf then you’ll love this too :)

Help create a broadband ‘blackspot map’

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

If you want broadband services but can’t get them in your area, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) wants to hear from you!

This organisation who are a lobby group that looks after the interests of rural communites and businesses, aims to create a map of the UK’s broadband blackspots in order to help solve the problem.
“Unavailability of affordable broadband in rural areas is a real issue, affecting many businesses and homes. We need to establish just how big an issue this is and where the problems lie,” said Douglas Chalmers of the CLA.

BT has claimed in the past that it can provide broadband services to 99.6% of households in the UK. But over the channel, France Telecome has recently announced that it is now able to provide broadband access to every household in the country, using satellite-based technology for extremely remote areas.

Email tracking plans criticised

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

A database of every email sent in the UK would not be safe in the hands of the government, human rights campaigners have said.

New laws, which will come into effect in March 2009 mean that ISPs will be forged to keep a record of every email sent or received in the UK.
The Home Office insists that this is a new measure vital for fighting cybercrime and terrorism but Liberty, the human rights advocacy group, says this is an attack on civil liberties as well as a waste of money.

“The government is alredy mooting plans to create a central government database where they hold all the information.” said Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty.
Stored data will include enough information to track down where and when messages were sent but does not include the contents of emails.

Recently the Home Office approved new powers for the police that allows them to hack into computers without having to apply for a court order.

More information can be found at www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk.

T9 Server Issues Resolved

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

I’m writing to apologise for the disruption caused to some of the websites hosted on our T9 Server this afternoon. Our staff were notified within minutes of the disruption and normal service was resumed just under 2 hours later.

During this time customers may have briefly been unable to access cPanel and FTP – this was in order to ensure security and system availaibility while the issue was investigated and resolved.

The cause of this disruption was an error with one of the system’s log files reaching its maximum size. The necessary measures to prevent this reocurring have been taken and the problem reported to cPanel so they can add a fix for future versions.

Once again our sincere apologies for the disruption this afternoon.

Disable WordPress WLWMANIFEST.XML Plugin

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

After upgrading our WordPress installation i noticed a new url reference in the source code that didn’t used to be there called “wlwmanifest.xml”. After doing some research it seems the WordPress Dev’s added this to enable enable tagging support for Windows Live Writer however, as none of us use Windows Live Writer it completely useless to us.

To remove this you need delve into the php to remove the two references for it but not everyone is comfortable editing php so we’ve written a very light plugin that will remove this for you.

To install this plugin, simply upload the wlwmanifest-disabler.php file to your /wp-content/plugins directory then navigate in your WordPress Admin to your Plugins area, find the pugin and Activate it.

This will remove the reference from the source code, it really couldn’t be more simple. Hopefully the WordPress Dev’s will add this themselves in future releases so users have the option of enabling it or not but until that happens this will do the trick.

Tested on WordPress Versions 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.7.1

Download

We will do our very best to keep this plugin up to date and will add a new comment when new versions are released but please understand that freebies are not our major priority :)

Important Notification

Friday, January 16th, 2009

As some clients are aware, we have been experiencing some problems with our phone line and internet connection over the last couple of days. This has resulted in delays in responding to support tickets and our telephone line producing a ‘busy’ tone when called.

Our provider, Virgin Media is working on the issue and it is expected that we will be unable to receive telephone calls and unable to respond to support tickets on Sunday 18th January between 9am and 5pm while they do what they need to do.

We can only apologise for this inconvenience and ask that you be patient during this difficult time.

Please rest assured that this issue has nothing to do with any client websites and only affects the service provided to our office.

Bogota Server Upgrades

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

At approximately 8pm tomorrow evening we will be upgrading our Bogota Server and renaming it to Caracas.

The upgrades will now include 8GB Ram and 6 Hard Disks which will really spead things up. You should notice faster response times in general and with FTP and email.

There will not be any down-time as such but as we are adding a new IP range it may take a couple of hours for your ISP to notice the new IP although this will not affect customers using a Dedicated IP Address.

If you would like to discuss this announcement in more detail please don’t hesitate to give us a call or submit a ticket :)
