This is a notification that on Thursday February 25th at 6pm we will be performing maintenance on the CARACAS server, updating its software to ease common permission problems and enhance security.
This work should cause only a short period of disruption to your website’s service – we expect no longer than 10 minutes.
We will be switching CARACAS to ‘suPHP’ which runs PHP under your username, allowing you to use stricter file permissions on your site. We strongly recommend setting a chmod value of 400 for all .php files, and 755 for directories. Chmod 777 will no longer be required as often mentioned by scripts during their installation.
This change in PHP will have a side-effect of preventing any ‘php_flag’ or ‘php_value’ lines in your .htaccess files from working so if you use either of these facilities, please remove them or contact us to prevent errors showing on your site.
If you’re not sure what we mean please don’t worry! Your site will almost certainly be unaffected and if you do see any problems after 6pm next Thursday, we will be on-hand to help.
For advanced users, suPHP will allow you to use your own php.ini file for custom requirements – please ask.
If you have any queries at all please do not hesitate to contact us.
