Flint Maintenance Update 2

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Very pleased to say that last night we replaced all the RAM in Flint and the system passed our tests. No chassis swap was needed as feared.

We only use brand new Dell hardware and stress test servers for a week under full load before bringing systems into production but it seems something slipped through. At no time was any data at risk :)

Flint Maintenance Update

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

This maintenance lasted about 30 minutes. The outcome confirmed our initial thoughts of a possible hardware issue (RAM/CPU – not customer data) following up on a recent system log entry.

We stress test new systems for a week before bringing into production and Flint survived a full load under these tests so we are confident the issue seen was a one-off entry or that our tests had the outcome they did due to a BIOS issue.

However, we take pre-emptive action at all times and will therefore be taking the system down at 5am Monday morning to move the drives into a new chassis. This should take no longer than 30 – 45 minutes.

Telephony Work Friday 10 September

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

We are having some work done on our telephone line on Friday 10th September which will result in us being unreachable by phone and also have no internet access. The work will take approx 10 hours but BT are unable to give us any start time. You can still leave a message on our voicemail and access our helpdesk should you need to submit a ticket, reply to a ticket, pay an invoice or place a new order but there will be a delay in response times which is unavoidable for which we apologise in advance.

Thank you for your patience.

Caracas Quota Update

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Caracas is currently updating its quotas for all users which required temporarily logging out all cPanel users.

Each account also saw ~5 minutes slow performance while the checks were made. Apologies for the disruption – normal service will be resumed shortly.

Important Future Changes

Friday, August 13th, 2010

There will be some extensive changes to our website happening over the next couple months.

Those clients who have been with us more than a year will already know that we moved from Hampshire to Doncaster last year which kinda makes “Hampshire Web Design” a tad redundant as we are no longer in Hampshire so after much deliberation, we will be changing our name to Web Kinect. The new domain is already registered and we have a holding page at www.webkinect.co.uk but we still need to build the new website.

So when will we be moving to the new domain? Well we can’t move until the new website is designed but im hoping to be ready to go around the end of September / beginning of October.

How will the move affect you? We will be moving the helpdesk and client area to the new domain so you will need to update your bookmarks but the most important thing will be the new Nameservers. If you have purchased your domain from another provider then you will need to update your Namservers to the new ones dome the time, just like you did when you first joined us. If you purchased your domain through us then you wont need to do anything as this will be done automatically.

Will there be any downtime? There will be approximately an hour of unnavailability while the nameservers are changed but this will only affect the HTTP services, not emails etc.

I will keep you informed every step of the way and give you plenty of notice on the launch day.

If you do need any clarification regarding this information or would just like to have a chat about any of these changes, please do not hesitate to give me a call on 0845 652 0107 during office hours.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support over the last 5 years, without you we wouldn’t be the successful business that we are today.

Kindest regards,

Andrew Stevens

Upgrade completed

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Server upgrade has now been completed. Unfortunately due to the extra security on Caracas we ran into a few unexpected problems resulting in approximately 24 minutes downtime for which we sincerely apologise. This is the first time we’ve done an upgrade in the evening instead of overnight which will now be revised.

Thank you for your patience and continued support

Maintenance – all servers

Friday, July 30th, 2010

This date is subject to confirmation, but on Saturday August 7th we will be performing minor maintenance on all servers to update to the latest versions of Apache, Nginx and PHP 5.2 to provide the latest features, security and performance.

This work is usually seamless with no disruption seen except for a momentary restart of the HTTP servers. We will, as always, do whatever we can to keep any disruption to a minimum.

Nginx – proven, stable, and fast!

Servers which do not currently operate Nginx will also have Nginx installed now that our configuration is proven after months of running on about half of our servers. The speed improvements are fantastic over a standard ‘cPanel & Apache’ setup.

PHP – last bugfix update to 5.2

We will be updating PHP from 5.2.13 to 5.2.14 which resolves numerous issues. Importantly, PHP 5.2.14 is also the last bugfix release in the PHP 5.2 series, meaning that we will be looking at migrating to PHP 5.3 in the near future where possible. News on this will be posted nearer the time; I mention this here only as an early warning – PHP 5.3 is a great improvement over 5.2, but with many changes. Security updates will also be issued for 5.2 so there is no urgent requirement for us to move to 5.3.

To ensure your site will be compatible with PHP 5.3, please check you are running the latest version of any software your site runs. Most popular software is now 5.3 compatible.

If you use your own scripts, a migration guide available on http://php.net/migration53, details the changes between PHP 5.2 and PHP 5.3.

As always if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
