Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

We’ve just come back from seeing Underworld 3 at the cinema.

As a big fan of the previous two movies i was really excited to see that a new one had been released although i’ve still only seen one TV ad for it. Before hand i popped on to IMDB to see what the plot was and i was a bit worried to see that not only was it a prequel to the previous two but also that neither Kate Beckinsale or Scott Speedman wern’t in it :(

I was pleasantly surprised as it is actually a good movie :D

I won’t go in to too much detail as i don’t want to spoil anyone’s suprise but the story this time focuses around Lucian who was the first human/werewolf to be born and Viktor takes him under his wing although keeps him as a slave. Lucian falls in love with Viktor’s daughter Sonja and want’s to free himself and the other Lycans and be with Sonja.
Needless to say things don’t quite go as planned so the slaughtering begins.

The special effects as in the previous movies are fantastic as is all the action. The end takes you virtually to the first frame of the first movie where Kate Beckinsale is squatting on that high building about to jump to the ground.

If you enjoyed the first two movies then you’ll definately enjoy this one! If like me you’re just a fan of anything Vampire and Werewolf then you’ll love this too :)

Help create a broadband ‘blackspot map’

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

If you want broadband services but can’t get them in your area, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) wants to hear from you!

This organisation who are a lobby group that looks after the interests of rural communites and businesses, aims to create a map of the UK’s broadband blackspots in order to help solve the problem.
“Unavailability of affordable broadband in rural areas is a real issue, affecting many businesses and homes. We need to establish just how big an issue this is and where the problems lie,” said Douglas Chalmers of the CLA.

BT has claimed in the past that it can provide broadband services to 99.6% of households in the UK. But over the channel, France Telecome has recently announced that it is now able to provide broadband access to every household in the country, using satellite-based technology for extremely remote areas.

Email tracking plans criticised

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

A database of every email sent in the UK would not be safe in the hands of the government, human rights campaigners have said.

New laws, which will come into effect in March 2009 mean that ISPs will be forged to keep a record of every email sent or received in the UK.
The Home Office insists that this is a new measure vital for fighting cybercrime and terrorism but Liberty, the human rights advocacy group, says this is an attack on civil liberties as well as a waste of money.

“The government is alredy mooting plans to create a central government database where they hold all the information.” said Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty.
Stored data will include enough information to track down where and when messages were sent but does not include the contents of emails.

Recently the Home Office approved new powers for the police that allows them to hack into computers without having to apply for a court order.

More information can be found at www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk.

Just been to see Twilight

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

I’ve just come back from the cinema to see Twilight so i thought some readers might be interested to know what its like.

I’m a major Buffy & Angel fan and love anything to do with Vampires so with all the hype on this movie i was really looking forward to it. Sadly thought it didn’t live up to any expectations.

Overall it felt like a move version of Buffy or Angel but without any of the comedy. First off you have a nice girl who moves to a new area to spend some time with her Dad as her Mum and his boyfriend are on the road because the boyfriend is a baseball player.
Nice girl starts her new school and is instantly attracted to the ‘hot guy’ who is mysterious and no other girl has managed to get his attention. The next hour is nothing more than the girl and the hot guy playing cat and mouse which was frankly really boring.

Eventually she realises that the hot guy is a Vampire and just like Angel he doesn’t feed on humans. Then come in the ‘bad Vampires’ who of course do feed on humans with one of them being a bit mental and decides to go after the nice girl. We then finally get treated to some action as the nice Vampire and his family fight to defend the nice girl against the mental bad Vampire. Sadly the action only lasts about 15 minutes and then the movie is over.

Had the girl been a Vampire Slayer instead of a human then this could actually have been quite good but it wasn’t to be. Instead the viewer has to sit through over an hour of a pretty boring love story and not really feeling anything towards to characters to empathise with their story.

Overall it was pretty boring and the trailers pretty much show all the action in the entire movie so if you watch most of the trailers available then you’ll have seen all the action LOL!

The actors did a pretty good job. Kristen Stewart who plays the girl reminded me a bit of Alli Lohan and admittedly Robert Pattinson has grown up and is pretty cute but the movie needs more than just a couple of hot actors.

The ending was pretty predictable and there’s bound to be a sequel but i’ll definately wait for the DVD release on that.

If they chucked in a Witch, a handyman friend and gave Bella a stake then it truly would have been a Buffy/Angel movie but without any of the comedy or empathy for any of the characters.
